Today saw the launch of the FLIR i3 Thermal Imaging camera at a price point below €1,000 (£895) for the first time. This product is an entry level unit targeted at the simple applications where a simple spot temperature is not enough. In fact this product neatly addresses one of the major failings of the whole spot radiometer market – the fact that it is a spot!
When trying to find the temperature of a component or object using a spot radiometer, it is difficult to be sure that you have in fact found the highest temperature of the item you’re interested in – with a 60×60 pixel array, you will get the equivalent of 3,600 spots – giving a much better chance of getting to the hot spot (or cold spot). You also get the advantage that if you are any distance away, you have a better chance of measuring accurately because you have more measurement points covering the point of interest.
With a Thermal Sensitivity of o.15°, this is a useful tool for fault-finding for electricians, maintenance engineers, HVAC and facilities management applications – particularly when you’re not too far away <5m) from your target. Just as you probably carry a multimeter in your toolkit, the FLIR i3 should become another must have diagnostic tool to help make better decisions.
Typical applications:
- Overloaded fuse boxes
- Overtightend fan belts
- Poorly lubricated bearings
- Blocked or restricted Radiators
- Leaking under-floor heating.
